This is a regular part-time stagehand position on the venue operations team supporting the Byham Theater and associated Trust facilities. The Continuity Crew Stagehand works in close collaboration with the Byham house crew and theater management staff to ensure safe, consistent, high-quality execution of a wide range of events, from touring theatrical productions to concerts, comedy presentations, and other live performances. This is a union position with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 3.

This individual is expected to be a well-rounded stagehand who is comfortable working across departments, with a strong foundation in theatrical lighting and audio, some experience with video, and a steady, solutions-oriented approach to live production. Continuity Crew Stagehands must be available to work a flexible schedule (including evenings and weekends), often working long hours to accommodate performance and event requirements. This role is stationed primarily indoors at the Byham Theater with occasional outdoor work at associated venues.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:
Education: Technical school education, high school diploma, GED, or history of theatrical work experience required.
Work Experience: Demonstrated experience or strong aptitude and willingness to learn in multiple disciplines with emphasis on:
  • Computerized lighting console operation and basic lighting systems knowledge
  • Audio console and basic system operation 
  • Stage carpentry / scenic installation
  • Theatrical rigging including safety awareness
  • Familiarity with technical theater tools and workflows
  • Projection/video experience is a plus
Supervisory Experience: No supervisory experience needed.
Technical Skills: Experience with theatrical software (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Lightwright), computerized lighting console operation, audio console and system operation, stage rigging, set construction and installation, lighting hang and focus, digital projection installation and operation preferred.
Intangibles: Skill or ability to learn about stage equipment and various tools used. Ability to work from oral requests and well as printed run sheets to achieve desired modifications/installation. Adaptable to a broad variety of work environments and artistic personalities. Positive, team-player attitude is essential. Willingness to work long hours, accommodating work schedule to requirements of performance and events. Ability to follow direction, meet deadlines, and perform under pressure in live-event environments.  Represent the Cultural Trust and IATSE Local 3 with professionalism at all times.

Essential Functions:
Main job responsibilities:
  • Support load-ins, performances, rehearsals, work calls, and load-outs for events at the Byham Theater and associated facilities.
  • Assist with lighting work including hanging, cabling, focusing, circuiting, troubleshooting, and supporting show operations as needed.
  • Assist with audio work including console operation support, patching, microphone and communications setup, troubleshooting, and general system support.
  • Assist with video work including rigging, screen set up, troubleshooting, and general system support.
  • Perform stage and deck work including assembling and disassembling scenery, stage equipment, and auxiliary items such as dance flooring.
  • Move and rearrange furniture, set up risers, and operate scenery-moving machinery.
  • Assist with video, audio, and light maintenance.
  • Support rigging and flying work under appropriate supervision and established safety practices.
  • Work collaboratively with touring personnel, visiting designers/technicians, audio engineers, electricians, carpenters, and other IATSE crew while maintaining safe work practices and professional standards.
  • Perform other backstage duties and maintenance tasks as assigned, consistent with operational needs.
  • Accept calls in line with the Trust’s Local 3 Continuity Crew Call Acceptance Policy.

  • Other backstage and maintenance duties as assigned.
     
Physical demands: This position frequently requires walking and/or standing for extended periods of time as well as frequently climbing stairs/ladders. This position requires physical strength to lift up to 50 pounds. This individual must be comfortable climbing ladders, working at heights in excess of one hundred feet, functioning in confined spaces, and working in dim/variable backstage conditions. 
Compensation: This is an I.A.T.S.E. Local 3 position, and a part-time position with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The hourly rate for this position is $33.32/hour plus benefits as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement between Local 3 and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
